There is nothing fishy about this tale…
It all began back when Sea-Base Aquariums “Aqua Man” Darren was a tiddler. At the tender age of 10 he fell in love with fish, began breeding Black Mollies and was soon doing a roaring trade in fish sales to his school mates.
Good advice and help was hard to come by. Probably a good thing because it only made Darren more determined to learn everything he could about aquarium fish, and inspired dreams of one day owning his own one-stop aquarium shop to offer expert advice on everything aquatic.
With his trusty microscope and a growing library of fish and aquarium-keeping books, Darren was well and truly in the swim.
From school to working in his dad’s nursery, Darren jumped at the chance to convert an old greenhouse into a fish room. Before long he was breeding many species of tropical fish and selling to the public locally and further afield.
Nine aquariums and three small shelves of stock formed the humble beginnings of Darren’s first retail aquarium shop. In 1985 the current fish room was built and now houses over 90 aquariums.
Ask Darren about his success in pioneering saltwater and reef aquarium keeping, and he is quick to acknowledge countless mentors along the way. And did we mention his endless appetite for reading and research? From fish diseases to water chemistry and an incredible depth of experience in just about any element of aquatic science you care to name.
Aquarium stores throughout Australia and overseas have long been benefitting from his expertise, and for years he has made a significant contribution to the aquarium industry.
Now he just wants to help you become as passionate about aquarium fish as he is!
